Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang Airport?

Bangkok is served by two international airports, and mixing them up is one of the most common — and most expensive — mistakes visitors make. Here’s how to tell them apart and get into the city from either one.

Suvarnabhumi (BKK)

Suvarnabhumi is Bangkok’s main international gateway — the large, modern airport most long‑haul and full-service flights use (Thai Airways, Emirates, Qatar, Singapore Airlines, and most European carriers). If you flew in from far away on a “proper” airline, you’re almost certainly here.

Don Mueang (DMK)

Don Mueang is the older airport to the north, now the base for low-cost and domestic flights — AirAsia, Thai Lion Air, Nok Air and similar. If you booked a cheap regional or domestic hop, check your ticket: it very likely says DMK.

Don Mueang has no direct city rail link, so a taxi or transfer is the simplest way in — about an hour to the centre. Our driver waits at Terminal 1 arrivals, Door 6; see Don Mueang airport transfer.

The trap: connecting between BKK and DMK

Here’s the one that catches people out. If you arrive long-haul at Suvarnabhumi and have an onward budget flight from Don Mueang (or vice versa), you must cross the whole city between two airports about an hour apart in traffic.

There is a free shuttle bus between them for passengers with connecting tickets, but it’s slow and subject to traffic, and it won’t wait if your first flight is late. How to be sure which one you’re flying into

1. Check the airport code on your ticket — BKK or DMK. This is the definitive answer.
2. Check the airline — full-service/long-haul usually = BKK; AirAsia/Nok/Thai Lion usually = DMK.
3. When in doubt, ask us — send your flight number and we’ll confirm the airport and the fixed fare.

Which is “better”?

Neither — they just serve different flights. Suvarnabhumi is bigger and closer to the rail network; Don Mueang is compact and quick to get through. What matters is knowing which one your flight actually uses, and having a ride that’s waiting for you at the right terminal.
